Drop

Drop lets you instantly send links, files, images, and notes between your devices — like Microsoft Edge's Drop feature, built right into FastLinkIt.

How It Works

  1. Register your devices — each browser or device gets a unique identity
  2. Send a drop — share a link, upload a file, or write a note
  3. Receive instantly — the target device gets a real-time notification
  4. Clean up — delete the drop when you're done; files are removed from storage

Getting Started

Automatic Device Registration

The first time you visit any FastLinkIt page, your device is automatically registered. You'll see "Name this device" in the top bar next to the Drop icon. Click it to give your device a memorable name (e.g., "Work Laptop", "iPhone", "Home Desktop").

Manual Registration

Alternatively, go to /drop and you'll be prompted to register with a name and device type.

Sending Drops

Go to Drop (/drop) in the sidebar. The left panel lets you send drops:

  1. Choose a target — select a specific device or "All my devices"
  2. Pick a type — Link, File, Image, or Note
  3. Enter content — paste a URL, upload a file, or write a note
  4. Click Send — the drop is delivered instantly

Drop Types

Type Content Storage
Link A URL No storage used
File Any file Uses your storage quota
Image An image file Uses your storage quota
Note Text (up to 4,000 characters) No storage used

Receiving Drops

Top Bar Notification

The Drop icon in the top bar shows a badge with the number of unread drops. Click it to see recent drops in a dropdown:

  • Links — click to open in a new tab
  • Files/Images — click to download
  • Notes — click to view on the Drop page

Drop Page

The right panel on /drop shows all received drops for this device with:

  • Type icon and preview
  • Source device name
  • Time ago
  • Action buttons (open, download, delete)

Browser Extension

The browser extension has a Drop tab that receives drops with polling every minute. A browser notification appears when new drops arrive.

Auto-Expiry

Drops automatically expire after 7 days (configurable by the administrator). Expired drops and their files are cleaned up automatically.

Device Management

Click the gear icon next to your device name on the Drop page to manage devices:

  • View all registered devices with type and last seen time
  • Remove devices you no longer use
  • The current device is highlighted

Tips

  • Use Drop to quickly send a link from your desktop to your phone
  • Upload a document on your laptop and download it on your tablet
  • Send yourself a quick note as a reminder
  • Right-click any link in the browser extension and choose "Drop this link to my devices"
  • Drops count against your storage quota for file/image types, so delete them when done
